Teleconvertors

I have a Canon 400D with 18-55mm and 28-105mm lenses, and I’m thinking of extending my focal range. I was looking at the Tamron 18-250mm lens but I was wondering whether a teleconvertor would do the job just as well as a telephoto zoom lens? I know Canon has a 1.4x and 2x types, with the 2x making my 28-105mm lens a 56-210mm. Do you think that this would be a better idea?

Which DSLR should I buy?

I have recently enrolled on a City & Guilds course in photography. The course covers basic digital photography as well as digital darkroom techniques using Photoshop Elements. For the third part of the course I have decided to choose the People module. I do have a keen interest in photography, but I’m unsure as to which camera to get. I originally had in mind either a Canon EOS 400D, EOS 40D or a Nikon D40 or D80. The gentleman in my local camera shop then suggested to me a Pentax K20D. He told me that they were all as good as one another but the Pentax had the anti-shake in the camera, whereas the Canon and the Nikon only have them in the lenses, therefore making the lenses cheaper to buy on the Pentax. I’m looking to spend between £300 to £700. What do you advise?
